Trump, GOP Congress Blamed for Mass Shootings by Huge Margins in Damning New Poll

It’s hard to get 3/4 of America to Agree on Anything — Except that Republicans Aren’t Tough on Gun Violence

Since Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced that Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller has indicted thirteen Russians for attempting to sabotage the 2016 Presidential election on February 16, the world has witnessed an absurd meltdown from President Donald Trump on Twitter. Aside from a curious obsession with America’s most popular living president, Trump is also touting (poorly rated) polls that show Republicans moving ahead of Democrats on the “generic ballot” question. Yet one poll remains highly unlikely to attain the honor of a presidential social media shout-out, however: a brand new Washington Post/ABC News poll on gun violence that asks Americans who they hold responsible for the continued wave of mass shootings in the wake of the Parkland massacre.

The poll, conducted from February 15 – 18, places the blame for American gun violence squarely on Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress, leaving little room to argue.

When asked “Do you think Trump/Congress is or is not doing enough to prevent mass shootings in this country? Do you feel that way strongly or somewhat?” Respondents said about the GOP Congress:

  • 59% strongly believe Congress is not doing enough.
  • 19% somewhat believe Congress is not doing enough.
  • 11% strongly believe Congress is doing enough
  • 8% somewhat believe Congress is doing enough.

That’s an aggregate total of 77% of Americans who believe the Republican-held Congress is not doing enough to stop mass shootings. When asked the same about Trump, they responded:

  • 50% strongly believe Trump is not doing enough.
  • 17% somewhat believe Trump is not doing enough.
  • 21% strongly believe Trump is doing enough.
  • 8% somewhat believe Trump is doing enough.

Combining “Strongly” and “Somewhat” produces a result of 62% of Americans who believe the president could be doing more to stop gun violence like the tragedy in Parkland.

To Americans who know how to follow the money, none of this is surprising. Tragic and sad, yes. But hardly shocking. The NRA spent over $36 Million on behalf of Trump’s presidential campaign. Which is why the public has been treated to such ignorance like this since his campaign began:

And it’s why we’ve been unfortunately exposed to the horrors of an AR-15 assault rifle in the hands of madmen at our schools, concerts, workplaces, and churches.
