Gates tells friends and family he’s had “A Change of Heart” As Mueller Ties On New Indictments In Russia Investigation
Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller dropped another bombshell in his ongoing Russia probe Thursday afternoon when he added a string of 32 new indictments against former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates. The charges, primarily related to tax fraud and money laundering, dramatically increased the potential for both Manafort and Gates to spend the rest of their lives in prison. And that possibility alone appears to have coaxed a guilty plea out of the 45 year old Gates.
ABC News reports that they obtained correspondence from Gates to relatives and friends:
“In the letter obtained by ABC News, Gates writes to family and friends ‘despite my initial desire to vigorously defend myself, I have had a change of heart,’ Gates explained. “‘he reality of how long this legal process will likely take, the cost, and the circus-like atmosphere of an anticipated trial are too much. I will better serve my family moving forward by exiting this process.'”
At the moment, Mueller’s office has yet to confirm the deal or offer a statement. Manafort and Gates plead not guilty when the original charges were filed in October 2016.
