Trump is on-again, off-again with Russia
As President of the United States, there are two things that Donald Trump has made clear he loves: Twitter and Russia. The former because the social media outlet has provided him with a method of quickly communicating his frustrations and policies to the public without having to hold a press conference, and the latter because Vladimir Putin represents a “strong leader” to Trump.
On Wednesday, April 11, however, Trump surprised the media by using Twitter to criticize the Russian Federation for threatening to block any U.S. missiles shot at Syria.
Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!

To give some backstory, there was another horrible chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma, which killed about 70 people. While no entity is sure who committed this act of terrorism, the United Nations has concluded that Syrian government forces were behind the previous Sarin gas attack in Khan Shaykhun.
Russia, however, denies that there was even an attack, claiming that Russian military specialists who investigated the area found no evidence of chemical weapons even being used. Because of this, Russian officials warned against U.S. intervention, prompting Trump’s aforestated response on Twitter.

However, something strange happened less than an hour after that tweet: Trump seemingly went back on his harsh words and instead advocated for a peaceful resolution:
Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race?

It is not clear what the President was talking about in this early morning message. While the United States and Russia are on opposite ends when it comes to the ongoing Syrian Civil War, it has nothing to do with the state of the Russian economy. And though both sides are talking extensively about missile strength and military power, there is hardly another extensive arms race going on.
Just like with “Covfefe,” it will be up to the public to analyze what exactly Trump meant.
